Epoxy flooring is becoming an increasingly popular flooring solution.
Known for its versatility and durability, epoxy floors are used increasingly in
public spaces like malls and concert halls, as well as private settings like
offices, homes, and apartments.
Notably, there are a few names for this kind of flooring, including resinous and polymer flooring.
Epoxy flooring is a synthetic resin floor system used for space/floor protection and beautification and is typically installed over concrete subfloors. Epoxy
can have many layers of thermosetting resin that are coated, trowelled, or poured onto a concrete base.
The chemical process bonds the substrate and the epoxy system. Epoxy is known to harden rapidly, allowing your company to resume operations
without delay.
Prepare the Substrate
The floor should be well prepared by mechanical abrasion, methods such as: diamond-grinding or shop-blasting are recommended. The floor will be vacuumed thoroughly prior to the installation of your resinous flooring system being installed.
Protecting Existing Surfaces
After the base has been prepared, tape will need to be applied to the perimeter of the area so that the epoxy will not stick to the walls. Tape should be applied to walls, doors, or other surfaces you do not want the epoxy to get on before work commences.
Selecting a coating for a surface begins once that surface has been prepared. Utilizing epoxies, urethanes, polyaspartics, and polyurea’s will ensure that the coating application is successful and will continue to function as intended over time.
As mentioned above, epoxy is a system consists of two parts, the resin and the hardener. It is imperative that the epoxy is well mixed, as failing to do so
results in soft-spots or uncured areas in the floor.
In addition, to lengthen the time the floor remains in good condition, you can extend its life by adding approximately 5% acetone to the resin.
First Coating Application
You must apply the initial coat with a notched or flat squeegee, distribute the epoxy evenly and a high-quality roller. Do not apply a second layer until the
first one has had time to cure (at least overnight).
Second Coating
The epoxy can develop bubbles the day after the first layer is applied. Therefore, the floor will need to sanded and vacuumed once again.
Right after you finish vacuuming, you can apply the second layer. Applying the second coat in the same process as the first. Repeat the first coat’s epoxy
mixing and rolling procedures. You should also let it cure overnight.
